How to Choose a Caregiver in Malaysia

Choose with clarity. Start with the right questions.

A useful comparison begins with the care required, not promises about being the best or cheapest.

PRACTICAL DETAILS FOR YOUR NEXT STEP

A practical guide for your family.

Helpful details, clear questions and the information to prepare before making an arrangement.

01

Write down the actual tasks

Separate personal routines from clinical procedures, then list the hours you need covered and who can help between shifts. Include the hours attached to each responsibility and which relatives already help. A specific task list makes it easier to compare the proposed caregiver role with the actual gaps in the household routine.

02

Ask about the person assigned

Discuss relevant experience, communication, identity, lawful placement documentation and references. For nursing, check the appropriate registration and practising status. Ask about experience relevant to the agreed duties, communication preferences and any credentials needed for the role. Clarify who will actually be assigned rather than relying only on a general agency description.

03

Compare written terms

Ask for fees, hours, rest, accommodation, days off, replacements, cancellation and the process for raising concerns. Read the quotation alongside the proposed task list. Ask about charges for changes, the off-day arrangement and how replacement requests work so the family understands the whole booking.

04

Plan the first handover

Show equipment, explain routines and agree who receives updates. Discuss how care will be reviewed if needs change. Agree who will receive the caregiver and introduce the home. Keep access instructions, supplies and contact details ready, and explain the first shift’s priorities in a short briefing.

05

Using an interview to discuss everyday fit

Prepare a few examples from the actual care day and ask how the proposed caregiver would handle the agreed responsibilities. Discuss communication, previous relevant duties and the type of support the person is comfortable providing. An interview is also a chance to explain your household routine clearly.

  • Ask about relevant duties
  • Discuss language and communication
  • Explain household expectations
06

Rechecking the plan after the first handover

Keep the first task list and quotation available for review. If the family finds that the schedule or duties need adjustment, raise the issue with MCS rather than informally expanding the workload. Confirm any agreed changes in writing so the caregiver and family share the same expectations.

  • Review the original scope
  • Discuss changes promptly
  • Confirm revised terms
